Venice was very picturesque but also immensely busy. It was a battle to see the sights as thousands of tourists constantly descend upon this small city. It was peak season! Gondola rides cost around 80 Euros ( 70pounds) but the scenery around the smaller canals is wonderful. We saw the Bridge of Sighs and Palace Ducale where the doges (kings) lived and went up the camponile (a lift took us this time) for some amazing views over San Marco's piazza We cruised around the Grand Canal - a one hour journey and were lucky enough to get front seats on deck for prime time viewing!
Many tourists equals high prices and a trip to the toilets cost 1 Euro ($ 10 HK ). The three nearby? (not that near) islands were well worth the visit and made for a great day away from the crowds!
We also visited the islands Murano (where they make Venetian glass), Burano (famous for its multicoloured houses) and Torcello which houses the oldest building in the lagoon.
This is Atilla the Hun's throne! But Roger didn't give a dam, he was tired and needed to sit down!
